The Barral Institute's definition of arthrosis is “a chronic condition of the articular cartilage of unknown cause, whose consequences after a long period of latency are marked changes in the affected joint, which can gradually result in its destruction.”
As per the Barral Institute, arthrosis initiates in the cartilage and progresses to affect the bone tissue. Subsequent cartilaginous alterations trigger biological processes that alter the structure of the joint, including the bone, synovium, and capsule. This leads to visible changes and the onset of joint pain. The cartilage gradually thins, losing its shock-absorbing capability, while the bone stiffens and reduces its ability to support the cartilage. Over time, joint functionality is gradually impaired.
Causes
Chronic degenerative diseases can develop over time due to both macro- and microtrauma.
Aging plays a role, with 70% of arthroses occurring in individuals over the age of 60.
Heredity is a contributing factor.
Obesity can lead to degenerative joint issues and metabolic complications affecting the lower limbs.
Metabolic disorders, such as renal dysfunction and certain systemic conditions like gout and chondrocalcinosis, can also be causative factors.
Menopause
Inflammatory conditions are also implicated.
